"The Sunflower" is an example of an automatic drawing based upon ideomotor response sets. I drew this as a demonstration of the technique of setting the conscious mind aside and allowing the unconscious to take over one's hand and move the hand about in a way that automatically creates a drawing. The particular technique I used here was a therapeutic one related to allowing the unconscious to create an image that "has everything to do" with the problem or issue being responded to in such as way that an insight is gained during the creation of the artwork . . . often an eureka moment or epiphany occurs just as the hand magickally stops moving and the image is completed.
