Smart Grid Augmented Reality experiement for Esquire

Esquire magazine is going to have a special experiment for their December issue . . . http://blog.newfiction.com/3-d-magazine . . . hold it up to a computer screen and out pops a 3D version of Robert Downey Jr. who gives a bit of info on the experiment for the magazine.

This is a bit of augmented reality fun with a webcam.

You can play with the concept via the Smart Grid Augmented Reality demonstration at http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/#/augmented_reality which is pretty fun for a few moments.  You will need to make sure you have a copy of the grid thingie at http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/ar/printme.pdf printed.

Hold the printed thingie up to your webcam and out pops a 3D model. They have both sun and wind energy variations of the litle nifty display.  It appears as if you are holding a working and moving and sound-making holographic model.  I imagine for the Esquire thing that Downey will be standing on a little stage thingie.

It's amazing, but not interactive – not like the kool augmented reality games for cellphones that let you use skittles as bombs and the like – but it's a step forward and a neat gimmick (yes, it's a gimmick but that doesn't make it inherently a bad thing).

All the best,
Brian
