iPhone 3G3d

Now that the Fujifilm Real 3D W1 is officially on the market in Japan (released today) and will soon be on shelves in Europe and the US and hopefully soon in Taiwan, we’ll finally get to see how it holds up in the marketplace.

Assuming the Real 3D W1 does well . . . or, well enough . . . we can expect other manufacturers will be jumping on the 3D bandwagon, not only repeating what Fuji’s put into their offering (more than was originally even hoped for) but going it one better.

So, it’s not unreasonable to expect that one day we may even get something along the lines of the following . . .

The iPhone 3G3d takes the iPhone and throws in the functionality of the Fujifilm Real 3D W1 and adds some other goodies. That’s a 350GB hard drive for all your regular iPhone needs plus twin stereoscopic lenses that give 2D or 3D photo (10mp) or video (VGA throgh HD options).

Yes, that’s an anaglyphic 3D preview image, although the actual product has anaglyphic, side by side freeview, and autostereoscopic viewing options (the last is what the Fuji camera currently has).

The lenses on the iPhone 3G3d are about 65mm apart, a bit less than a classic Stereo Realist and quite a bit closer together than the Fuji Real 3D W1 (which seems to be designed to increase depth in scenes while the iPhone 3G3d would be much much more appropriate for taking portrait or medium shot photos, which is what a cellphone camera is typically used for). With a Real 3D W1, selfphotos and portraits are a bit less pleasing to the eye, although the matching system is helpful.

The lenses are on a swivel, the iFlipLens system, that allows you to flip the lens 180 degrees for videochat while working the iPhone 3G3d controls and for taking 2D or 3D photos of yourself. For videochat mode, the built-in image system flips the video stream so that it is oriented conveniently for chat. The chat software app is compatible with most computer chat software. You can configure video output to interlaced, anaglyph, side-by-side or a number of other options, including 2D, which you can choose from a handy menu so you send the right format to the chat receiver. Multiple formats can be selected for each person in conference mode as well.

Of course, there’s a lot of nifty features in the iPhone 3G3d and many of them are beyond state of the art . . . this is mostly because the actual product doesn’t exist . . . it’s a bit of wishful thinking . . . but, most of the features are very possible and so it isn’t too terribly much of a stretch of the imagination that we might just be seeing the iPhone 3G3d or something very much like it in the not too distant future. I know I’d probably get one.

All the best,
Brian
