You could use that phrasing, if you wished. Certainly deep trance (experiential hypnosis or somnambulism) is the gateway to any effect.
Of course, what you get out of the session and how you approach it may also be dependent upon your session goals. If I am doing recreational pastlife work, my patter will be different from the patter and processes I use for therapeutic work.
For instance, for recreational or introspective work, I tend to guide the person to a "positive experience" and avoid playing out revivification of death scenes and the like. However, for a therapeutic session, one might borrow from hypnoanalysis and ask the person to feel the negative feelings they are dealing with and then ask them to "go to a time and place that has EVERYTHING to do with this FEELING" and the like. Obviously, for therapeutic work, one really should get some solid training before moving on.
Also, for pastlife or other Lifetrance processes, it's a good idea to understand that just because it's experienced vividly, doesn't mean it's a genuine past life experience. Hypnosis is no proof of reincarnation, only of the intensified imaginative involvement of the unconscious. This does not mean that there is no such thing as reincarnation or that some hypnotic experiences may turn out to be genuine, only that the contribution of phantasy in the mix is too powerful not to discount veracity. The proof of reincarnation has to come from other methods, if any such proof is ever determined. That's okay, faith is a pretty powerful and comfortable place to work within as are healing metaphors.
Anyone wishing to do any sort of Lifetrance work also needs to understand and practice clean session language. If you don't know what that means, then find out and master it before proceeding. Of course, the same should be said of any application of hypnosis.
