Are Speed Hypnosis Inductions Safe?

We are officially starting off our new ASK ME A QUESTION series (https://briandavidphillips.net/hypnosis-qa) with an email query on Speed Hypnosis Safety . . .

"I have studied speed inductions for a while, and only used for a reinduction."

If you've studied them for awhile, I am curious why you would use them only for reinduction.  Reinductions are the easiest thing in the world and certainly are fast but the fact that you are reinducing does not really mean much as far as speed.  A hypnotist who has truly taken the time to learn speed inductions should be able to tell you that they work fine with first-time trance partners.

There is no need to test the water with a few toes, jump on in.  Speed hypnosis inductions are built for first time trance partners the same as any induction.  You will find that you not only save time but that you also are a lot more effective with folks overall, not to mention having more time for the therapy (the induction is only the way we open the door into trance, it is often the part of the session so many people focus upon but it is NOT the most important aspect of a hypnosis session).

I do have an excellent comprehensive DVD set on SPEED HYPNOSIS TECHNIQUES that folks can purchase at http://www.briandavidphillips.net/store – in fact, qualified folks who pass the competency examination can even earn for specialist certification.  Seriously, this multi-DVD set is one of the most comprehensive video products on this subject available.

"So many of the conservative hypnotists say they are dangerous (cardiac arrest, medical problems etc)."

Many?  Really.  Name five experienced competent and generally respected hypnotists who have actually been properly trained with speed inductions who have said that speed inductions are dangerous and might lead to medical problems such as cardiac arrest.

If speed inductions are done correctly, there is NEVER any risk of cardiac arrest or other medical problems.  Yes, there are indeed folks out there who don't know what they are doing or who are doing some rather unsafe inductions that involve nonconsensual shock, jerking folks to the ground, or the like.  However, I would not lump discussion of these folks in with a discussion of speed hypnosis per se but in the general category of incompetence, idiocy, or general unsafe practice along with the poseurs, idjits, and would be Svengalis or scam artists.

A speed induction should never put anyone at risk.  Sure, some inductions look very dramatic.  When I pull on a person's arm and say "sleep" and he physically drops fast, it may appear that I'm being physically aggressive, but the movement in such an induction is never ever physically rough.  Actually, it's very gentle.  It only appears rough to the observer because of the immediate and deeply responsive effect it has upon the trance partner, who is always an informed and consenting participant in the process.

A student, a well known trainer in her own right, in one of my speed hypnosis seminars once told me that she had her arm dislocated once when a very very famous hypnotist did an arm pull induction on her and pulled her arm out of the socket (aggravating a previous shoulder injury).  First off, he should not have done such an induction with someone with a previous injury.  Secondly, he was doing it WRONG.  Just because someone's famous it doesn't mean they know what they're doing . . . at least in regard to certain techniques.  Some folks make assumptions based upon how things appear on a video or the like and then they go out and recreate it without knowing how to do it properly.  In other cases, there are folks who not only do thins bass ackwards, they teach dangerous techniques to their students who go out and do it wrong as well (the fellow who's running around yanking folks arms full force and throwing them to the ground willy nilly comes to mind).

Yes, some speed inductions are physical.  However they don't all have to be that way.  In fact, I created an entire DVD full of GENTLE SPEED HYPNOSIS (Gentle Approaches to Instant and Rapid Hypnosis Inductions) available at http://www.briandavidphillips.net/store for folks who like to keep things simple and gentle.

"1) Do you usually do a pretalk?"

Yes, although . . . sometimes . . . the pretalk is very very very very brief.

"2) Do you use expectancy during the pretalk to help to ensure success?  Basically tell them when I shake your hand, your eyes will close etc."

Yes.

"Thanks"

You are very welcome.

It is very important that if you wish to practice any hypnosis, speed or otherwise, that you seek out appropriate and competent training.  Speed hypnosis, like any hypnosis, is not dangerous in any way.  However, yanking unsuspecting folks by the arm and tossing them to the floor can be.  Safety safety safety and a huge dollop of common sense is very helpful.

Folks who wish to learn safe and effective and fun speed hypnosis should really consider joining us for the WALKABOUT TRANCE BEACH RESORT GETAWAY TWO this coming 15-16 August 2009.  We're going to have a wonderful time and folks will get instruction in how to do some pretty amazing things, well beyond typical speed hypnosis, we're venturing into the world of creative improvisational speed hypnosis.  See http://www.walkabouttrance.com for more information. Sign up now.

All the best,
Brian
