Voodoo Effect by Derren Brown

A query regarding Derren Brown’s voodoo effect at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lW2yKlNFFuU . . .

Do you think this would work.

Yes I do think it would work . . . actually, I absolutely KNOW this would work as I have performed this very effect both as a standalone effect and as part of a performance. I can’t vouch for how Derren performs it as there are a number of ways to get the effect via gimmick or deception but I perform it as a demonstration in hypnotic suggestion and will be doing a similar effect this weekend as part of a hypnotic seance performance. It is ideally done as part of a series of "imagination games" based upon suggestibility effects (see the resources on my webpage at http://www.briandavidphillips.com for a solid list of these, they are fully explained and demonstrated on the core skills DVD set) and then segued into the voodoo effect. It absolutely requires confidence projection in the presentation. As a standalone effect, it relies upon the same expectancy principle one uses in many hypnosis inductions (contrary to what some folks have assumed, this induction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EQN6zKYTxM works primarily upon the same principle . . .

I don’t explain the underlying operators in the youtube video but do in the core skills program).

A while back, voodoo trance setups were one of the hypnotic video challenges at http://www.trancesociety.org for those who would like to see more suggestion-based examples.

All the best,
Brian
