Student-Created Photographic Tarot Decks

I teach at a national university and occassionally use Tarot-theme projects as part of my communication courses – particularly when introducing concepts related to critical thinking and influence as conversational language sets.

This year, we decided to play a bit and so the students divided into groups as part of a Thematic Photographic Tarot Project in which each group set a theme and created their own photographic Tarot Deck consisting of original Major Arcana cards. The students also created their own original "spread" with explanations as well as a Tarot game that would engage communication among the players.

The student-created major arcana Tarot decks are now online in their own gallery . . . here . . . at the end of the semester, I will remove the incomplete decks as well as the ones that were not submitted in completed format.

Some of these decks are just BEAUTIFUL and the students who created them are to be congratulated. Certain of the images are actually very compelling as well.

I am particularly fond of the Blythe Tarot so-named as it uses the Blythe series of hobby collectible dolls as the models (I have since noticed the dolls on sale in various comic book and hobby shops in Taipei). One of the students made the special costumes and props and settings for the shots and then processed the images in Photoshop or Photo Impact. I also like the Beauty of China deck, an example of one of the "let’s take photos of our friends" approaches to the photographic element of the project with a twist in terms of image processing. A few other decks are also very noteworthy.

Wow.

Of course, some of the decks are less than original or a bit low on the artistic merit scale but the purpose was to have them thinking creatively and engage their imaginations which was accomplished. There are some very interesting approaches to the project among the student pieces.

All the best,
Brian
