Star Wars . . . 3D

George Lucas still pushing the news of his 3D plans for Star Wars . . . Lucas Plans Star Wars in 3D:

“I’ve seen a 3D process that’s quite amazing. It really makes Star Wars look good — it’s a three dimensionalisation of the film and it’s not like a 3D movie where things are poked in our eyes — this is actually a different way of looking a the movie. I’ve never been a big fan of 3D, but in this process I’ve become quite a convert. So if we can digitise theatres, because it needs digital theatres to actually work, we will probably reissue all the movies.”

Technically, dimensionalization does NOT require digital theatres. 3D film projection can work with any format from the digital shutter glasses Lucas has fallen in love with (upper end, beautiful system but prone to other issues that simpler systems don’t have to worry about such as mechanical failure in the glasses, battery charge for the glasses, emitter failure, and the like), polarized systems that require more light but and silver screens but those problems can be dealt with through higher lamp power or changing to a different perf setting to cine160-3D or similar systems through cheap adaptors such as explained here and here or anaglyph with red-blue glasses or anachrome type approaches which, when appropriately used, corrects retinal rivalry problems as well as other issues common to the system.

I like digital high end shutter glasses, but the delivery system is independant of the issue of creating 3D content.

BTW, we saw Revenge of the Sith today and the action scenes are very kickbuttful . . . wow . . . the opening sequence alone is just going to be amazing in 3D. Really. Wow and double wow.
