Play that song . . . piano girl

My daughter, Kaye Elizabeth Yi-Chi Law Phillips, performed tonight. She was WONDERFUL! I’m not just gushing because I’m some foolish dad who only sees starlight in his daughter’s eyes and moonbeams in her smile . . . well, okay, I am a gushing foolish dad . . . but she was still WONDERFUL . . . albeit, Kaye was the only performer who caused the emcee to nearly drop her microphone as she kept blurting in nearly incomprehensible gasps “she’s so beautiful” over and over. Not sure exactly what that had to do with one’s mastery of the piano but she gets that a lot. Actually, that sort of thing makes Kaye uncomfortable so whenever we’re out walking in Taipei and we hear someone yelling at us from across the street “ni hao piaoliang” (“you’re so beautiful”), I tell her that it’s amazing that so many people think I’m beautiful but weird that they only say it when I’m walking with her. It’s an in-joke we share and she thinks it’s cute and it does break some of her tension. How does one respond when total strangers aggressively shout how beautiful you are? Lorraine and I have been asked a number of times how many kids we have after someone’s seen Kaye and when we tell them that we only have one child, on a number of times women will get aggressive and nearly demand that we MUST have more. One woman said we “owe it to the world” to have more children like Kaye. Well, I certainly love my daughter, and it’s no secret I would have loved to have had more children . . . but I don’t think we’re particularly at fault if we don’t have more. Maybe that woman should go kick the gods in the balls if she wants to blame anyone.
