A Porn Trap to Steer Clear of . . .

David Berlind reports in A porn trap to steer clear of that more and more companies or government services are disciplining or firing folks for having porn on their work hard drives. Depending upon the policy of the organization, the penalty may include other actions. Unfortunately, things aren’t as clear-cut as they might seem. Often folks who have been let go were unaware that their system had porn on it . . . particularly because many sites that appear to be legit have link pop-ups to porn sites which then save images in cache or in hidden directories on a hard drive. A number of folks have been arrested for having child pornography on their hard drives who were unaware of any adult images on their systems, let alone illegal ones. Of course, this begs the question of whatever-in-the-world are adult entertainment sites thinking when they invasively take control of a potential customer’s system like this. It certainly isn’t a practice that any legitimate service provider should be doing . . . unfortunately, that becomes irrellevant to employers who are looking to downsize as a recent case Berlind uses to illustrate the point clearly demonstrates . . . needing to downsize with no clear division layoffs set, folks with porn on their hard drives went first, regardless of how it got there.
