At the The Script Analyst Archive, Neil Gaiman discusses the process he went through in adapting the wonderful Miyazaki film Princess Mononoke for British and American audiences.

Unlike many such projects, he didn’t just translate the piece (well, someone else did the actual translations), he changed the story and direction to fit Western sensibilities. It is less a translation as it is an adaptions.

When the film first came out here in Taiwan, it was in Japanese with Chinese subtitles. I loved it. Of course, I love Miyazaki’s work anyway and who can’t love the girl wolfrider scenes.

We ordered the English version from the US long ago but at that time it was not being shipped overseas . . . so we sent it to the home of a friend’s sister and my friend was to bring it over after his next trip home. Unfortunately, she received it but then lost it. Boo hoo. I really wanted to see the American version too.
